Parties
put spotlight on campaign for 84th District

VIRGINIA BEACH
Democrats and Republicans are pumping money and resources
into the election for the open 84th House District seat, making
it the most expensive race in South Hampton Roads.
The district
has been represented by Republican Robert F. McDonnell since 1991,
but he is now the GOP candidate for state attorney general in
the Nov. 8 election.
With no incumbent
running for re-election, Democrats view their candidate, Supriya
Christopher, as the partys best chance in years to break
the Republicans hold on Virginia Beach politics. Currently,
all state delegates and senators from Virginia Beach are Republicans.

To
Oceanas plight, a chilly response
The Virginian-Pilot © September 21, 2005
There
was one certainty in a Virginian-Pilot survey of the men and women
who would serve in Richmond: Virginia Beachs effort to keep
the jets flying at Oceana Naval Air Station will face plenty of
uncertainty at the Capitol.
Despite
vigorous arm-twisting, in General Assembly districts across Hampton
Roads there remains a troubling lack of commitment for doing what
it will take to keep Oceanas 200 F-18s from moving to Cecil
Field.
Its
troubling not because the politicians are wrong to wonder whether
Oceanas planes can be preserved, but because if Virginia
Beach cant even count on their neighbors for the will necessary
to save the base, theyre unlikely to find support elsewhere.
...In
the race for the open 84th District seat, Democrat Supriya Christopher
gave the closest thing to an unqualified commitment. The wife
of a F/A-18 Hornet pilot, she advocates state money, as well as
condemnation if there is no other option. Her opponent, Republican
Sal Iaquinto, says he needs more information before he supports
condemnation.

Democrat
Supriya Christophers husband flies F/A-18 Hornets from Oceana.
She said saving Oceanas jets is her top priority. Ill
be the voice to advocate for as many state funds as we can get,
she said.
Christopher
said she would also support condemnation if there is no other
option.
Im
not saying Im an advocate for condemning homes, she
said. Im going to have the courage to do whats
necessary to protect that base and the quality of life for our
military families. We absolutely cannot lose that engine.
Republican
Sal Iaquinto also supports state money but said he needs more
information before backing condemnation. Theyve placed
thousands of residents in the APZ zone in a terrible predicament,
he said.

State
delegate race already has 2 front-runners
By JON W. GLASS, The Virginian-Pilot © February 7, 2005
VIRGINIA
BEACH -- Ten months before the November election, two candidates
have positioned themselves as front-runners in the race to succeed
state Del. Robert F. McDonnell.
The 84th House District has been represented for
the past 14 years by McDonnell, a Republican.
But his decision to step down to run for state attorney
general has Republicans and Democrats gearing up for a wide-open
race.
In the running are Democrat Supriya Christopher and
Republican Salvatore R. Iaquinto.
